Serena Mivumo River Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Perched on the banks of the Rufiji River in Selous National Game Reserve, Serena Mivumo River Lodge is the ultimate safari retreat.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of twelve timbered chalets scattered throughout the forest for added privacy. Each chalet is built with a traditional thatched roof and adorned with high ceilings, wide picture windows, a crystal chandelier, and modern leather and rattan-style furniture. The elegant en suite bathrooms feature marble vanities, baths, and a romantic outdoor shower. Moreover, every room comes with its own extensive private sun-deck, loungers, plunge-pool, and stunning river views. Perfect for groups or families, the Villa offers three double bedrooms, each with an opulent bathroom, and a private viewing deck with sun loungers, plunge pool, and rain shower.

The camp is located on the Rufiji River within the Selous Game Reserve. Encompassing an area of over 21,000 square miles, not counting additional buffer zones, Selous is about three times the size of South Africa’s Kruger National Park and twice the size of Serengeti National Park. Its rivers and lakes sustain phenomenal wildlife concentrations, including Africa’s largest populations of elephant and wild dog. Along the Rufiji River and beyond, an astonishing number of animal and bird species can be found including waterbuck, reedbuck, bushbuck, crocodile, hippo, and black and white colobus monkeys. Sandbanks are crowded with huge crocodiles, exposed mud banks are shaded under red clouds of carmine bee-eaters, and swampy islands are visited by wandering elephants.

Daily game drives are conducted in comfortable 4WD vehicles and led by knowledgeable trackers and guides to ensure the best possible experience. Nighty game drives explore the nocturnal doings of many animals missed during the day such as the elusive leopard, bush baby, and genet. There are also all-day game drives that include a visit to the hot springs. Guided nature walks take a more intimate look at the local animals and vegetation often missed from the vehicle’s vantage as well as including lessons on tracking and what plants are used for medicines. Boat cruises take in the waterways of the Selous and provide a chance to spot crocodiles and hippos. A sundowner cruise is the ideal way to watch the sunset while floating down the Rufiji River with a cocktail and canape.

Housed under their own thatched and timber chalets are the spacious central dining room, lounge, library, and bar which are interconnected by broad wooden walkways. The main area overlooks the Rufiji River and enjoys excellent views of pods of hippos and elephants playing in the water. The lodge has a sundeck and infinity pool too.
