Oyster Bay Hotel

PLAN MY TRIP

The beautiful Oyster Bay Hotel in Dar es Salaam is as crisp and clean as the ocean breezes wafting into its luxury suites making it a great start to a Tanzanian adventure.

Accommodations consist of eight elegant ocean-facing suites. Each air-conditioned suite is decorated in a modern African design with an emphasis on clean lines and cool colors and is furnished with either two twin beds or a king-sized bed facing French doors looking out to the sea beyond. The spacious en suite bathrooms come with deep, free-standing tubs and large walk-in showers. A private balcony beckons guests to relax and take in the hypnotic serenity of the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. Other amenities include lounge areas, writing desks, plasma screen televisions, and free Wi-Fi.

The hotel is located in the private, residential area of Oyster Bay just fifteen minutes from the city center of Dar es Salaam. The city’s name means “Haven of Peace”. Although Dar es Salaam is no longer the country’s capital it is still the center of the permanent central government, and the country’s leading center for arts, fashion, media, music, film, and television, and important financial institutions. Built in 1865 or 1866 by Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanzibar on the edge of the Indian Ocean, the city fell into decline only to be revived by the German East Africa Company in 1887. It then passed to British rule after World War I, and finally received independence in 1961. It is now the third fast growing city in Africa.

The hotel is designed for travelers who are passing through Dar es Salaam for a few hours or overnight before embarking on one of the many exciting adventures Tanzania has to offer. The safari bound can use the hotel for a night before heading to the famous Serengeti for the dramatic annual great migration to see millions of wildebeest and thousands of zebras thunder across the bush in search of new pastures. Other game-rich parks include laid-back Arusha, baobab-dotted Tarangire, and the unique Ngorongoro Crater. Thrill-seekers can enjoy a good night sleep at the hotel before daring one of the four trails up majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. Others may whet their appetite for ocean vistas before relaxing on the spice-scented island of Zanzibar.

The hotel’s contemporary African motifs add to the charm of the airy, open lounge and dining areas which flow into the shaded veranda and gazebo. Tropical breezes blow across the garden. A lap pool invites travelers to cool off or relax on the pool deck. There is even a study with internet access.
