Matemwe Beach House

PLAN MY TRIP

Swaying palm trees, pristine beaches, unspoiled views, and reefs brimming with ocean life await guests at Matemwe Beach House, a true island paradise.

Matemwe Beach House can accommodate six guests with two double bedrooms on the ground floor and a spectacular mezzanine bedroom upstairs. The master bedroom on the ground floor comes with a king-sized bed and an en suite bathroom with a shower. The other bedroom has a king-sized bed and shares a bathroom with the mezzanine room. The house’s private plunge pool is ideal for a cooling swim, and the expansive wooden deck offers a leisurely place to unwind with its tasteful collection of hammocks, couches, and scatter cushions.

Set on the exotic spice island of Zanzibar, the hotel boasts stunning ocean views. Once the world’s largest producer of cloves, this spice island also provided nutmeg and cinnamon to Europe, the Middle East, and China for over 500 years. Originally founded by Africans, the island was discovered by the Persians in the 10th century. Since then it has had a strong Arabic influence with a brief period where the Portuguese conquered the seaports, only to revert back to Arabic control. The sultan of Oman relocated his capital here. Zanzibar is actually an archipelago with two main islands: Unguja and Pemba.

With the shore beckoning each day only steps from the front door, there is plenty of sunbathing, beachcombing, and picnicking on the beach. A personal butler can also assist with booking various other activities such as snorkeling trips, reef walks, and village visits. For an extra charge, guests can enjoy a scuba-diving adventure, dhow boat trip, visit to nearby Stone Town, or a spice tour. A cultural tour on a working spice plantation illustrates how nutmeg, vanilla, and cardamom are produced. There is also kayaking, kite-surfing, and deep sea fishing available.

With sister property, Matemwe Lodge and its many amenities a short walk away, Matemwe Beach House allows for complete privacy. A personal butler on site attends to all needs, while the chef arrives daily to prepare scrumptious meals. These meals consist of a lot of fresh crab, lobster, and fish from the fishermen who net seafood offshore during high tide. No set menu means that guests decide with the chef what the individual menu will be for the day, typically a fusion of traditional Zanzibari and international flavors. A well-stocked private bar is also available in Matemwe Beach House.
