Chem Chem Lodge

Set near the eastern edge of Lake Manyara, Chem Chem Lodge is an exclusive retreat that blends in with the unfenced wilderness near Tarangire.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of eight luxury tented suite positioned far apart from each other. Each spacious suite uses natural textures and surfaces like wood, canvas, cotton, and lava rock. The en suite bathrooms feature twin vanities, an indoor bath, and a romantic outdoor shower for bathing al fresco. A private, shaded veranda allows guests to unwind and enjoy the marvelous views and animals parading right before their tent. There is also a family tent consisting of two adjoining tents with twin beds for the kids.

The lodge is located in its own private concession which forms part of the Burunge Wildlife Management Area that runs between Lake Manyara and game-rich Tarangire National Park. The 49,421-acre concession guarantees exclusive wildlife viewing away from the crowds. Best known for its impressive elephant population, Tarangire National Park is home to large herds totaling nearly 2,500 individuals. The sixth largest national park in Tanzania, it occupies 1,096 square miles. The park is also famous for its huge number of baobab trees, tree climbing lions, resident zebra, and wildebeest. While thousands of flamingos, as well as over 400 other bird species flock to Lake Manyara, a soda lake, making the area a bird lover’s paradise.

Half or full day trips to Tarangire National Park explore the game-rich environment in a comfortable 4×4 vehicle and include a picnic breakfast or lunch. Other expeditions venture to Lake Manyara to view the pink-festooned waters of thousands of flamingoes while enjoying a coffee and a snack. For an aerial view, a hot air balloon ride lets guests glide over the ancient baobabs and wildlife of Tarangire. There are also cultural tours to local Maasai villages for an authentic experience learning about their unique way of life. Visitors can even join a Maasai warrior for an unforgettable run across the plains. For a quieter stroll, there are also walks with the Maasai who give lessons on the various plants and animals. Bush breakfasts and sundowners are a fantastic way to enjoy a delicious meal or drink in the beauty of nature.

The main lodge area reflects the shape of a flamingo with its wings spread wide. One wing houses a gourmet dining area and an outdoor fire pit, while the other wing contains a fully-stocked bar, cozy lounge, inviting fireplace, and a library. A viewing deck overlooks a busy watering hole. The refreshing pool rests in the shade of acacia and palm trees and the Amani Spa offers a wide menu of treatments.
