Bashay Rift Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Set on a steep, verdant hill just minutes from Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Bashay Rift Lodge offers charming lodging and panoramic views of the Rift Valley below.

The lodge is built on a working coffee plantation. Accommodations at the lodge consist of thirty rooms spread throughout the picturesque gardens. Each room has its own individual style and décor with a distinct “Farm in Africa” ambiance. There are double, triple, and quadruple rooms available. The family rooms comprise two rooms with a shared lounge and bathroom. Honeymoons suites are also available. Each room features its small sitting area and private terrace where guests can gaze at the lush, green valley while enjoying a cup of delicious local coffee.

The camp is located in Bashay Village just six miles from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Situated within northern Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains about 100 miles west of Arusha, Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Created when an ancient volcano erupted and then collapsed upon itself, the crater is now carpeted with expansive grasslands dotted by a few acacia trees. The natural enclosure is home to impressive varieties and concentrations of wildlife including some 25,000 mammals. In addition to the zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest that graze the plains, the region is home to all of Africa’s “big five” mammals: lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, and elephant. The uniqueness of the crater’s topography and the accessibility of its wildlife make it a prime tourist destination in northern Tanzania.

The lodge is the ideal base from which to explore not only Ngorongoro Crater but also Lake Eyazi where guests can interact with both Hadzabe & Datoga tribes who still practice a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Staff at the lodge can help arrange game drives and day trips to explore all these national parks. There are also hiking and mountain biking trails on the forested slopes of Ngorongoro. The lodge has mountain bikes available for exploring the local areas and villages. Guests can also explore the lodge’s own coffee plantation to see where there delicious morning brew came from.

The main building houses the lodge’s restaurant, lounge, and bar. The spacious restaurant dishes up delicious cuisine with fresh ingredients sourced from the lodge’s own gardens, including their own coffee honey from the plantation’s hives. A smaller restaurant serving traditional Tanzanian cuisine sits under a pergola overlooking the inviting infinity pool and the Rift Valley. Massages are available next to the pool. The main bar includes a sweeping terrace with panoramic views of the fertile valley. There is also a bar next to the swimming pool.
