The original ranch house was built in the 1940’s by Italian artisans. Since then, it has been beautifully restored and can house up to fourteen people. Accommodations at the lodge consist of four cottages set within a lush, tropical garden. Three of the cottages include two separate bedrooms each. For those traveling with children, a family cottage has interconnecting rooms and bathroom. All rooms are en suite and include a private veranda. For honeymooners, the Italian Cottage which was built by a post-war Italian artist, provides a large and private space for two.
Sosian Lodge is part of a private conservancy and working cattle ranch. It sits on the equator at 5700 feet high. Moreover, it is part of the beautiful Laikipia Plateau that stretches from the Great Rift Valley to Mt. Kenya. An area of abundant wildlife, it is home to buffaloes, lions, leopards, hippos, giraffes, as well as the more rare Grevy’s zebra, wild dogs, and Jackson’s hartebeest. A bird watcher’s paradise, there are more than 250 species of birds hereabouts. The diverse landscape varies between grass plains and thicker acacia woodlands, a favorite spot of the elephant herds, Laikipia ranks second highest in elephant populations in Kenya. As a successful cattle ranch, it thrives alongside conservation efforts and the neighboring wildlife. The ranch breeds Boran cattle and a small dairy herd to provide for the lodge.
The most unique activity offered is a tour of the cattle ranch with the opportunity to participate in cattle dipping. Plus, there are twenty-six horses at the lodge including some children’s ponies. Experienced riders can venture out on the two-three hour tour through open country. Novices and children can enjoy shorter rides in the fenced area. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are conducted by expert rangers in an open 4×4. An experienced guide leads morning bush walks as well as lessons on how to track animals. A forty-minute camel ride is a fun way to explore the area. The neighboring Ewaso Narok River furnishes the perfect opportunity to fish for catfish, tilapia, yellowfish, and barbel; take a swim in a natural pool, or even jump off a 30 foot high waterfall. There are also cultural visits to the local villages to learn about tribal cultures and crafts.
The 1920’s lodge houses a sitting room, dining room, bar, and billiards room. Known for its delicious, home-cooked food, the lodge utilizes its own garden and ranch. An afternoon tea is served on the veranda overlooking the lush gardens. While dinner is either enjoyed in the dining room or under the stars around a campfire. The lodge has a lovely pool complete with a thatched pool house and bar.
