Kenya

Campi ya Kanzi

PLAN MY TRIP

Perched in the Chyulu Hills of Southern Kenya looking towards mighty Mt. Kilimanjaro, the award-winning Campi ya Kanzi is the only safari camp built on a Maasai-owned reserve.

Accommodations consist of six luxury tented cottages and two luxury tented suites. Each thatch-roofed room sits above the ground on a wooden platform and includes comfy beds dressed in the finest Italian linens. The spacious en suite bathrooms feature eco-friendly flush toilets, dual vanities, a shower, and a bidet. The two luxury suites are named the Hemingway and the Simba due to spectacular views from the private veranda across the hills to Mt. Kilimanjaro. Great for families or groups, the separate Kanzi House has three doubles rooms and one twin and comes with a private dining area catered to by its own chefs and waiters as well as its own pool, Jacuzzi, and private safari vehicle.

The camp sits in the 283,000-acre private Maasai owned Kuku Group Ranch in the Chyulu Hills made famous by author Ernest Hemingway as the “Green Hills of Africa” and looks out on the iconic heights of Mt. Kilimanjaro. In fact, the camp is located only thirty miles from Mt. Kilimanjaro. The camp’s name in Swahili translates to “Camp of Hidden Treasures which is an apt moniker for a lodge rich in both stunning views and plenty of big game including lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and antelopes. A community project, the camp was built and now run by both the local Maasai community and the Belpietro family for an authentic Maasai experience that benefits the local community.

Tailor-made safaris are conducted by local Maasai trackers in open Land Rovers. Moreover, guests enjoy all the beauty and game of the nearby Maasai Mara but away from the crowds. Walking safaris benefit from intimate knowledge the local Maasai possess about the flora and fauna of the area. Horseback riding safaris provide a unique view and cater to all levels. The camp can also book overnight excursions to Ithumba Camp in Tsavo East National Park to interact with the orphaned elephants cared for by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Scenic flights over Mt. Kilimanjaro take visitor’s adventures to new heights.

The eco-friendly camp includes a thatch and stone central area encompassing a comfy lounge with plenty of seating and a large dining room. Beyond the dining room lies a stone deck area fitted out with seats and communal fire pit. For more relaxation, there is refreshing pool and yoga/meditation classes. The camp uses 100% rain water and solar power to reduce its footprint. The property is extremely kid-friendly with the owner’s children often running about.
