Olonana

PLAN MY TRIP

Recipient of a gold award from Ecotourism Kenya for its environmental sustainability, innovative wetlands, and tree-planting projects, Sanctuary Olonana is a luxury camp with a conscience.

Accommodations at the camp are made up of fourteen spacious, comfortable canvas tents. Twelve of the tents have two four-poster beds draped from floor to ceiling in mosquito netting. The large modern en suite bathrooms include double sinks, a toilet, and a shower. Each room enjoys a private veranda overlooking the view with stunning views and the chance to see a hippo wallowing in the water. The camp also offers two large, honeymoon suites that also come with an outdoor shower. Other amenities include an in-room safe, bathrobes, and a hairdryer.

The camp sits on a private stretch of the Mara River within the game-rich Maasai Mara. Well-known for its vast diversity of wildlife, the Maasai Mara Reserve is “Big Five” country where elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, and buffalo roam freely. Of course from July to September, most people come to watch the great migration as millions of wildebeest and thousands of zebra and Thomsons gazelle seek new pastures between Tanzania and Kenya. There are also 300 bird species living in the region as well as antelope, bat-eared foxes, crop-eared caracal, and many more.

One of the best ways to view these incredible creatures in their natural environment is to join a game drive led by Olonana’s experienced guides. The open safari vehicles allow for excellent viewing, photography, and filming opportunities. Other exciting activities include cultural visits to a local Maasai village and school. Nature walks take a more intimate look at the flora and fauna with the help of a knowledgeable local guide. Sundowners, bush breakfasts, picnics, and dinners can be enjoyed surrounded by the stunning natural setting of the Maasai Mara.

The main lodge area overlooks the incredible Mara River, home to a pod of very active hippos. Viewing the hippo and other spectacular wildlife from the main dining room and veranda provide unending entertainment. Carefully prepared food originates in the organic garden, and an afternoon of high tea delights guests of all ages with delectable cakes, pastries, and scones. Other amenities include a library, a refreshing pool, and a mini-spa featuring a combination of traditional African remedies and French marine therapies.
