Il Ngwesi

PLAN MY TRIP

Owned by the local Maasai community and completely constructed from local materials, Il Ngwesi offers an exceptionally authentic and meaningful experience.

II Ngwesi has six open-sided and spacious rooms, which are tucked away in the hillside. Each room sits atop a broad wooden deck, and a steeply pitched thatch roof covers the whole space except for the front veranda. Each room has an en-suite bathroom with running water, wash basin, toilet, and private outdoor shower.

The Il Ngwesi area is a community conservation and livestock region in northern Laikipia, just north of the Lewa Conservancy. Built in 1996, the lodge is owned, managed, and staffed entirely by members of the local Il Ngwesi Maasai community. Your stay will combine great wildlife viewing with authentic cultural immersion.

Guests can view wildlife from their room, from the lodge, and on daily game drives. Other activities include guided walks to the rhino sanctuary and visits to the local “boma” where you can learn about honey collection, traditional hunting, and Maasai music and dancing. There are also opportunities to spend time with local women and learn about their beading techniques or visit a community health clinic or school. All the cultural interactions are done respectfully.

Guests of Il Ngwesi also have the opportunity to campout overnight, visit the Mukogodo Forest, and enjoy a bush breakfast by the Ngare Ndare River. At the lodge you can enjoy the swimming pool as well as in-house beauty treatments or therapeutic massages.
