Solio Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

The only guest accommodations within the magnificent private Solio Game Reserve, Solio Lodge provides an intimate and luxurious safari experience.

The lodge consists of five contemporary cottages with large en-suite bathrooms with a double sink, bathtub, and shower. Each cottage has the added luxury of a private deck and panoramic views of the nearby hills and Mount Kenya in the distance. Floor to ceiling windows afford stunning, wide-ranging views and the opportunity to spot a rhino without getting out of bed. Guests can lounge indoors on comfy chairs around a cozy fire or from the privacy of their sundeck. There is also a family unit encompassing one twin cottage and one double cottage with a shared living area. Other amenities include hand-made Kenyan toiletries, dressing gowns, slippers and hair dryers in every room, as well as in-room safes, mini bars, mini fridges, and tea/coffee facilities.

Solio Lodge is nestled in a valley between the majestic slopes of Mt Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains and part of the Solio Conservancy. The 45,000-acre Solio Reserve is internationally well-known as the most successful private rhino breeding reserve in Kenya with over 74 black and 155 white rhinoceros living here. Other wildlife species found in the reserve include buffalo, zebra, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah and plains game such as eland, oryx, impala, waterbuck, thompson’s gazelle, and warthog. The lodge promotes conservation efforts and education of the local area and provides funding from guest’s fees for giving back to the community.

There are several activities offered from the lodge. Day and night game drives in a 4×4 vehicle offer up plenty of sighting of rhinos, buffalos, warthogs, lions, leopards, cheetahs and zebras to name a few with the extra luxuries of blankets, hot and cold drinks, and sweets to enhance the journey. Guided nature walks provide a chance to see flora and fauna missed from the game drives. For some local color and flavor, there are tours to a local farm which also produces coffee and tea with the chance to stay for lunch. Early morning horseback rides and mountain biking are two great ways to explore the reserve in more depth. There’s excellent trout fishing to be found in Aberdare National Park. Finally, for a bird’s eye view of the reserve guests can take a scenic helicopter flight up to Mount Kenya with a picnic breakfast.

All guests enjoy full-board during their stay, which includes all meals and most drinks. Dinner is often served outside under the stars within sight of grazing waterbuck, zebras, and impalas. The lodge’s chefs serve up delicious fare using fresh organic ingredients from Solio Lodge’s own vegetable garden. For added comfort and relaxation, massage therapists are available for in-room treatments.Spasaab has a range of spa treatments and uses natural Kenyan ingredients. Wi-Fi can be assessed from the mess area. The camp also helps keep guests fit with a gym in a bag: each bag contains a yoga mat, skipping rope and post safari stretch card. Children are welcome at Sasaab and under threes stay free with babysitting services included in the lodge’s rates.
