Grumeti Hills

PLAN MY TRIP

Overlooking the rolling savannah below, Grumeti Hills is an eco-friendly safari camp with easy access to view the annual Great Migration across the Serengeti.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of twenty tents spread throughout the property for added privacy. Each spacious canvas and thatched-roof tent includes a large bedroom with double, triple, and quadruple configurations available. Every tent’s dressing room alcove includes an en suite bathroom with a vanity sink, flush toilet, and solar-heated shower with plenty of hot water. The tent’s best feature is its open stone terrace with sweeping views of the bushlands below.

The camp is located in the Grumeti Wildlife Management Area on the border of Serengeti National Park. Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park, as well as a world heritage site, the Serengeti is famous for its annual great migration, when millions of wildebeest and more than 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelle flood the plains in search of fresh grazing land. The drama only increases as the herds cross the Grumeti River while large Nile crocodiles lay in wait for a meal. The river also attracts large herds of buffalo and elephant, while the open plains are the ideal habitat for cheetah.

Night game drives explore the Wildlife Management Area with the help of a ranger from the Wildlife Department in an open game vehicle equipped with high seats and special lamps for spotting nocturnal animals at play. The area is known for its large lion prides and extensive clans of hyena. Walking safaris are the best way to explore the area in depth. Local rangers impart their knowledge of the local flora and fauna while hiking to the Grumeti River where guests can take a picnic lunch.

The thatched roof main building of the lodge is centrally located and houses a restaurant, bar, and cozy lounge area – all with magnificent views of the savannah. Next to the lobby is a small shop for those must have souvenirs. The lodge’s pool lies on the southern end of the property and is carved into the rocks. It uses an environmentally friendly water system to create a refreshing escape from the heat of the day. A convenient pool house contains changing rooms, toilets, and showers. There is also a massage tent with magnificent views of the plains.
