The Elephant Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Settled on a ridge between the Masuwe River and the Zambezi gorges, The Elephant Camp is a luxury, eco-friendly camp in the teak woodlands of the Victoria Falls National Park.

There are two camps: The Elephant Camp Main with twelve luxury suites and The Elephant Camp West with four suites that are perfect for small groups or families. Each spacious, open-front tented suite is set on a wooden deck and comes fitted with a large comfortable bed, a private lounge, and an en suite bathroom with a deep soaking tub and an outdoor shower. A private deck features a plunge pool and magnificent gorge views. During the sunset and sunrise, the light catches the mist coming off the nearby Victoria Falls.

The camp is located in a private game reserve in Victoria Falls National Park just six miles from the world-famous falls themselves. Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia where the Zambezi River drops more than 328 feet into the Batoka Gorge forming the falls itself. Named after Queen Victoria by Scottish explorer and missionary, David Livingston, the falls are often referred to as “Mosi-oa-Tunya” or the Smoke that Thunders. At 5,604 feet wide, it is the largest curtain of falling water in the world. The Park itself is home to elephant, Cape buffalo, southern white rhinoceros, hippopotamus, eland, and gazelle.

A guided tour of Victoria Falls is the biggest draw to the camp. Guided birding and nature walks explore the flora and fauna of the private concession. Community tours visit rural villages to learn about their way of life. Sundowners at Batoka Gorge take in the views with a drink and canape in hand. The Lookout Café serves up lunch while visitors gap at the 393 feet drop down into the rapids of the Zambezi River. An elephant encounter lets guests unobtrusively interact with the animals and learn about the sanctuary. For an additional fee, other activities include a game drive, a Victoria Falls canopy tour, Chobe National Park day visit, white water rafting, helicopter rides, canoeing, and Zambezi River cruises.

The Elephant Camp overlooks a waterhole that is fed by natural streams in the rainy season. The main area houses a lounge, bar, and dining area that lead out to wooden decks and a pool with a view of the gorge. The camp’s chef cooks up delicious traditional African dishes which are paired with fine South African wines. Meals can be enjoyed on the balcony of the main lodge or a private deck. Relaxing spa treatments are available in guest’s rooms. There is also a curio shop and library.
