Camp Hwange

PLAN MY TRIP

A classic camp focused on providing a classic safari experience, Camp Hwange lets visitors get up close and personal to iconic African wildlife

With eight large, thatched chalets, one of which is a two-bedroom family room, Camp Hwange is the ideal escape into one of Zimbabwe’s most diverse areas. The main lounging area is in the middle of the camp, with four tented rooms on either side. Every room (including the main area) looks out over a permanent waterhole that constantly attracts a variety of native wildlife. A private deck outside allows guests to relax, taking in the sights and sounds of a unique ecosystem. An en suite bathroom with an indoor shower provides comfortable modern amenities, and mesh windows let in the cooling savannah breezes and sounds from the waterhole.

Campe Hwange is in the heart of Zimbabwe’s oldest and largest national park. The camp is named after Hwange National Park, which has long been a pioneer of wildlife and habitat conservation in this area of Africa. Protecting unique species like eland, sable, roan, and southern reedbuck is a focus of any camp in this area, and Camp Hwange is no exception. And while the lesser-known antelope relatives are exciting for avid travelers, guests new to the safari experience will be amazed by the volume of elephant, buffalo, lion, cheetah, and leopard that live in the trees and on the plains.

One of the passions that founded the camp was exploring African wilderness on foot, and the camp continues this even today. Open air vehicles allow for close game viewing, but visitors will most authentically observe the flora and fauna from the ground, trekking along dusty trails following elephant or buffalo herds or lion prides. The camp offers access to a few log pile hides, allowing guests to safely but personally observe animals that approach the waterhole for a drink.

The central location of the camp’s main area creates a focus on community and friendship. Sharing meals or tea in the communal dining area, gathering around the fire in the early mornings, or chatting over drinks in the evenings brings guests together through their unique experiences in the wild landscape. The library contains books and artifacts full of rich local history that visitors are welcome to peruse.
