Ruckomechi Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Ruckomechi Camp lies on the banks of the Zambezi River, overlooking the mountains of the Great Rift Valley across the river.

Accommodations at the camp consist of ten luxury tents including two family unites. Eight of the tents come with two three-quarter beds. The family tents are comprised of two en suite rooms. Each spacious tent features a small sitting area with a comfy couch and a coffee table. The en suite bathrooms have double vanities, a flush toilet, and both an indoor and outdoor shower. For added privacy, each tent has its own shaded making it the perfect spot to relax and watch the wildlife.

The camp enjoys the exclusive rewards of being set in the private Ruckomechi Concession. The great Zambezi River with its large population of hippos and the beautiful Zambian foothills can be seen in the distance. It also lies within the greater Mana Pool National Park at the heart of the Zambezi Valley. The area is famous for its large concentrations of buffalo and elephant, while predators such as lion, wild dog, leopard and cheetah are often sighted here too. Wildlife on the surrounding plains include Greater kudu, Burchell’s zebra, impala, warthog, and common waterbuck. An abundance of birdlife lives here like the collared palm-thrush, racket-tailed roller, three-banded courser, western banded snake-eagle, Arnot’s chat, green-capped eremomela, African golden oriole, Lilian’s lovebird, and Meve’s starling.

Game drives early in the morning or late afternoon are conducted by expert rangers in open 4X4 vehicles within the Ruckomechi Concession, taking in a coffee break or a sundowner at a scenic spot. Night drives are also available. The vehicles use a red-filtered spotlight to ensure disturbance of the game is kept to a minimum. Boat cruises down this stretch of the Zambezi River take in the life in, on, and around this iconic river including grunting hippos and bathing elephants. A more adventurous option is a canoe trip for a closer view of the water birds and other wildlife. Nature walks led by an expert guide provide an intimate and up-close view of the surrounding bush. Catch and release fishing on the Zambezi include a chance at hooking a tilapia, barbel, and tigerfish.

The camp is situated under broad-canopied ana trees, much loved by the elephants for their rich nutritious seeds. The camp also has an outdoor “bath with a view” in a secluded, scenic spot. The central dining, bar, and lounge areas faces the magnificent escarpment across the river in Zambia. A separate area with a pool and sun loungers invites guests to go swimming and sunbathing during the heat of the day.
