Tena Tena Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Shaded by a grove of beautiful mahogany trees, Tena Tena Lodge in the exclusive Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa National Park provides a comfortable temporary home away from home.

Accommodations at the camp consist of six luxury tents. Each tent is spaced far apart from its neighbor ensuring privacy as well as magnificent views of the Luangwa River. Each elegant bedroom is open to nature. There are plenty of sitting areas to relax in and enjoy the views. Plus, the large al fresco en suite bathroom come with double vanities and an outdoor shower. A private veranda is fitted with plus chairs making it the ideal spot to unwind with a good book or a refreshing drink.

The camp is located on the banks of the Luangwa River on Robin Pope Safaris’ private land outside South Luangwa National Park, a world-famous wildlife haven. The 5,623-square mile park enjoys a dense animal population including impalas, pukus, waterbucks, giraffes, and buffaloes grazing on the plains. A high number of leopards stalk the dense woodlands, while herds of elephant wade through the marshes and hippos play in the Luangwa River. The Muchinga Escarpment forms the park’s western and northwestern boundaries, sloping steeply down to the river from the west side. The river valley, continued to the west by the Lunsemfwa River valley, forms a natural barrier, and to this day there are no man-made roads spanning the valley.

There are both day and night game drives available in comfortable Toyota Land Cruisers and conducted by an expert guide. Walking safaris study the park in greater detail and observe the smaller animals with the aid of a guide and an armed National Park Ranger. Bird watchers can enjoy spotting some of the 400 recorded bird species in the region. From the end of December to April, seasonal boat trips explore the rain-filled lagoons. For those seeking more local culture, there is a unforgettable tour of Kawaza Village. The Wildlife Education Center is a great place to visit, especially for children who can learn how the local kids are taught about wildlife and conservation.

Tena Tena means temporary home, something the property aims to provide. It was the first camp opened by Robin Pope Safaris. The central area of camp has been crafted around a large termite mound and shady mahogany tree. The raised dining and sitting area is shaded by an enormous tent hung between leadwood poles and overlooking an old hippo run. There is plenty of plush seating where guests can mingle, take in the scenery, and indulge in a delicious meal and a refreshing drink.
