Accommodations at the camp consist of five luxury chalets including one family villa. Each chalet is custom-made from grass and canvas and is stylishly decorated to blend in with the natural beauty of its setting. Each bedroom comes with either two twin beds or one double and a deep soaking bathtub right in the room with views to the beautiful wilderness outside. The family villa comprises two bedrooms and two bathrooms and can house up to two adults and three kids. Every chalet enjoys its own private deck, perfect for sipping a morning coffee while taking in the wonders of nature.
The camp overlooks the Luangwa River in South Luangwa National Park, a world-famous wildlife haven. The Muchinga Escarpment forms the park’s western and northwestern boundaries, sloping steeply down to the river from the west side. The river valley, continued to the west by the Lunsemfwa River valley, forms a natural barrier, and to this day there are no man-made roads spanning the valley. The Park enjoys a dense animal population including Impalas, pukus, waterbucks, giraffes, and buffaloes grazing on the plains. A high number of leopards stalk the dense woodlands, while herds of elephant wade through the marshes and hippos play in the Luangwa River.
There are both day and night game drives available in comfortable safari vehicles and conducted by an expert guide. Walking safaris study the park in greater detail and observe the smaller animals with the aid of a guide and an armed ranger. Bird watchers can enjoy spotting some of the 400 recorded bird species in the region.
The name Mchenja means ebony for the grove of trees that lend their shade and beauty to the camp and are the site of many leopard and lion spottings. The main area houses a dining room, bar, and comfy lounge area. Though delicious meals are often enjoyed outside on the riverbank under a ceiling of stars as the Luangwa River flows past. The camp also has a refreshing pool which has been known to become a source of water for thirsty elephants as well as a cool respite from the afternoon sun.
