Uganda

Mihingo Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

In an exclusive nature reserve next to Lake Mburo National Park, Mihingo Lodge is one of Uganda’s rich gems.

The lodge has twelve luxurious tented rooms, each with its own unique charms and décor. Each spacious canvas tent comes with en-suite bathrooms that feature hot and cold running water, showers, and flush toilets. The room incorporate the natural setting by including doorways framed by dead olive wood branches, natural colored pigments in the cement, and granite boulders in the design of some of the bathrooms. The tents also enjoy their own private veranda overlooking the waterhole, lake, forest, or rocky outcropping making it the ideal place to relax while enjoying a morning coffee delivered by a staff member.

The lodge is located in Lake Mburo National Park which encompasses an extensive area of wetland and several species of mammals and birds found nowhere else in Uganda. At 229-square miles, the Park is small yet has a rich variety of habitats including dry hillsides, rocky outcrops, bushy thickets, open and wooded savannah, forest, and lakes and swamps. The Park is the only place in Uganda where eland, impala, and klipspringer can be found and has the largest population of zebra in the country. It also has the highest concentration of leopards. Other wildlife living in the park include buffalo, waterbuck, topi, warthog, reedbuck, and oribi. Lake Mburo and fourteen other lakes are home to hippos, water fowl, and crocodiles.

An exciting and unique activity available at the lodge is the horseback safari. Guides adjust the ride to the skill of the group, and two experienced guides normally accompany each ride. Beginners enjoy the horseback safari walk because it is the best way to view wildlife without startling the animals. Many other exciting activities are available, including traditional game drives, game walks, boat trips on Lake Mburo, walking safaris near Lake Mburo, nocturnal game drives, mountain bike rides, and cultural walks. Families especially enjoy making memories together by watching bush babies in their natural environment, and viewing game from the observation hide at Mihingo waterhole.

The large main structure blends easily into its natural setting with its thatched roof, rocks, weathered olive tree wood, and native grasses. The dining area gives way to impressive views of game gathering in the valley below and spectacular evening sunsets over Lake Mburo National Park. A lot of the delicious food here is grown in the lodge’s aquaponic garden. The bar has a cement sofa curving around the granite rock. Guests can play tennis at the lodge’s clay tennis court and swimming in the gorgeous infinity pool.
