Gorilla Forest Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Due to its strategic location in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp often has entire gorilla families wandering through the camp.

Gorilla Forest Camp boasts eight luxury tents, perfect for couples or families. Each tent features a traditional thatched roof, a spacious interior, stylish décor, and two comfy queen-sized beds. Included in the bathroom facilities is an oversized bathtub overlooking the jungle canopy. The panorama that spreads out below the private viewing deck is remarkable. And a personal attendant, who will see to every need, is assigned to each tent.

At an altitude of between 3,500 and 8,500 feet, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is regarded as one of the most biologically diverse forests in Africa. It is spread over a series of ridges and valleys that form the eastern edge of the Albertine Rift. The park is home to more than 300 mountain gorillas, half the world’s surviving population, and around 120 other mammal species. These include eleven primate types such as black and white colobus, red-tailed and blue monkey, and chimpanzee. Other animals include forest duiker antelopes, bush buck antelopes, rare forest elephants, giant forest hogs, and over 200 species of butterflies. Bwindi is also one of the principle birding destinations in Uganda with more than 350 bird species on record.

Gorilla trekking is the biggest draw to the area. Guests can track three different gorilla families, but the limited number of available permits means that advanced booking is essential. The time spent tracking is between three and eight hours, while the time spent with the gorillas is approximately one hour. Gorillas are found in the thick forest, which makes for tricky tracking, especially given the steep hillsides. However, the lodge has specially customized sedan chairs with support and harness so that less able guests can be carried into the rainforest to track the gorillas. Other enjoyable activities include a two-hour community walk to visit a small tea farming project, local banana beer brewery, local clinic, and traditional medicine man. This is often followed by a performance by the Batwa pygmy tribe. Some other notable attractions are birding walks and forest walks to the magnificent Munyaga waterfall.

The main camp area features a comfortable lounge, bar, dining cottage, and raised natural platform for open-air dining. All overlook the surrounding rainforest, providing incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. During cooler weather, the central cottage is a warm retreat, and the mini spa offers guests natural, relaxing treatments including a deep herbal massage, hydrating facial, foot massage, manicures, and pedicures.
