Uganda

Mahogany Springs Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

In southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley, Mahogany Springs Lodges lies within a magical sanctuary not just for the highly endangered mountain gorillas.

The luxurious Superior Suites are available in twin, double, or triple configurations. An en-suite bathroom features an open terra cotta shower, and the beds are surrounded by mosquito netting for the ultimate in a comfortable night’s sleep. All suites provide impressive views from their private terrace. The complete privacy of the Presidential Suite offers all that the Superior Suites offer and more. It features two bedrooms, two en-suite bathrooms, spacious living room, large private terrace with unique views, two desks, and two dressing tables.

At an altitude of between 3,500 and 8,500 feet, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is regarded as one of the most biologically diverse forests in Africa. It is spread over a series of ridges and valleys that form the eastern edge of the Albertine Rift. The park is home to more than 300 mountain gorillas, half the world’s surviving population, and around 120 other mammal species. These include eleven primate types such as black and white colobus, red-tailed and blue monkey, and chimpanzee. Bwindi is also one of the principle birding destinations in Uganda with more than 350 bird species on record.

Guests can track three different gorilla families, but the limited number of available permits means that advanced booking is essential. The time spent tracking is between three and eight hours, while the time spent with the gorillas is approximately one hour. Gorillas are found in the thick forest, which makes for tricky tracking, especially given the steep hillsides. In addition to the gorilla tracking and wildlife viewing, guests enjoy hikes to the nearby waterfalls and guided tours of the local community including trips to visit the local Batwa tribe, better known as the Pigmies where local medicine healer can point out various plants used for medicinal purposes. There is also a guided tour of the lodge’s vegetable garden. Guests are even invited to plant a tree or shrub to offset the carbon they used while at the lodge.

The lodge has an expansive outdoor terrace where visitors can marvel at the panoramic views. The main area features expert interior design work, a large living room, one-of-a-kind bar and lounge, double-sided fireplace, and cozy dining area. Private bush breakfasts or romantic dinners by the river are available by special request. Subedi, the head chef, has created a fusion of Asian, African Middle Eastern, and European flavors for an incredible dining experience. Highlights are daily teas and weekly BBQs held on the outdoor terrace.
