Kuthengo Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Tucked under shady baobab and fever trees on the banks of the beautiful Shire River in Liwonde National Park, Kuthengo Camp provides rustic charm with modern comforts.

Accommodations at this cozy camp consist of just four spacious safari tents with a choice between two twin tents, one king tent, and one family tent. Each tent is fitted with modern furnishings and uses an eco-friendly evening breeze air conditioning cooling system for the bed within the mosquito net. The en suite rooms include a luxurious bathtub, unique double vanity, and a romantic outdoor shower. However, the room’s best feature is the private deck where guests can sit with a cool drink and watch the waterbucks amble past.

The camp is located in the popular Liwonde National Park on the southern tip of Lake Malombe in the south of Malawi. The park encompasses 220-square miles of diverse landscapes with dry Mopani woodlands in the east and more tropical palm savannah and baobab trees in the floodplains near the Shire River. The Shire River is home to hippos, Nile crocodiles, and plenty of elephants as Liwonde boasts the highest population of elephants in Malawi. Other big game animals found here include sable antelope, impala, waterbuck, reedbuck, warthog, kudu, yellow baboon, pangolin, monitor lizards, leopard, and vervet monkeys. With the highest year-round bird watching in Central and Southern Africa, Liwonde enjoys over 400 bird species.

Daily games drives are conducted in custom safari vehicles with two-tier seats and an open-top design ensuring everyone gets the best view of the ample wildlife. The benefits of a small camp are that the safari is tailored to each guest’s desires. For a closer and more detailed look at the local flora and fauna, safari walks are led by knowledge guides and an armed National Park scout. During the Emerald Season in late December to early April, the first rains transform the dry landscape into a verdant oasis that is perfect for birding and photographing wildlife. It also the perfect time for seasonal boat trips through the lush and busy lagoons.

The main dining and comfy lounge areas enjoy panoramic views of the plains. This eco-friendly camp runs off solar power with a backup generator. The camp also provides complimentary bottled water. Kuthengo Camp is the perfect choice for an intimate safari adventure in the unspoiled Liwonde National Park.
