Limalimo Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Perched on the edge of a steep slope, Limalimo Lodge provides elegant accommodations and access to the beautiful Simien Mountains National Park.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of twelve boutique rooms scattered over the grounds in the shade of the trees. There are twin, double, triple, and family rooms available. Each room has floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the mountains and comes with an en suite bathroom with double vanities, a shower, and flush toilet. The hotel has been described as eco-chic and works hard to sustain the environment by using rammed earth, wood, and thatch to build the rooms.

The lodge is situated on an escarpment in the Simien Mountains National Park. The park comprises eighty-five square feet of land, most of it gentle highland ridges reaching almost 12,000 feet above sea level. The landscape is covered with grasslands and dotted with isolated trees including the Erica arborea and the bizarre giant lobelia. These high plateaus often end abruptly in deep escarpments. Walis ibex thrive in these mountains. Other animals living here include the Simien fox, Ethiopian wolf, gelada baboon, the klipspringer, bush buck, and several birds of prey. Due to the rareness of many of these species, the area is one of conservation as well as being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are many exciting activities offered at the lodge. Guided treks explore the peaks, riverbeds, and lowlands of the Simien Mountains with a knowledgeable guide. These treks range from half-day excursions to the ten plus days going further afield into the mountains and camping. For those choosing the longer trek, mules or cars will carry the gear. Bird lovers will enjoy the guided bird walks for a chance to spot rare endemic species. Cultural tours visit the local town of Limalimo for a taste of life in a traditional Ethiopian village. Visitors get to witness a coffee ceremony as well as learning about making the traditional spongey bread called injera and other traditional cooking, beer making, farming, guided market visits, and beekeeping.

The lodge’s bar and restaurant are poised on top of the hill with views along the dramatic escarpment and onto the lowlands below. The terrace is the best place to relax and take in the mountain views. Romantic champagne breakfasts start the day of right. Delicious picnic lunches can be enjoyed on a trek or under a tree at the lodge. Washing and massaging the feet and calves of visitors who have traveled long distances is an ancient Ethiopian tradition and can be enjoyed after a trek through the mountains. Early morning yoga sessions are led by the General Manager.
