Rwanda

Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel

PLAN MY TRIP

Set in a lush, mountain garden just a short drive from Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park headquarters, Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel offers intimate and comfortable accommodations in the heart of mountain gorilla territory.

Accommodations at the hotel consist of thirteen rooms. The standard rooms come with a double bed. Deluxe rooms feature either a king-sized bed or two twins, plus a changing room. The Family Suites has two big bedrooms and a shared sitting room. Whereas, the VIP Cottage has two big double rooms and a living room with a dining table for six people. All rooms include an en suite bathroom with a shower. Other amenities include television, mini bar, tea/coffee station, Wi-Fi, and a hair dryer.

The hotel is located on the road to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, the starting point for all gorilla treks. Spanning ninety-nine miles in the northern part of Rwanda, it is the oldest national park in Africa. As a part of the great volcanic chain of the Virunga Mountains that straddles the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the D.R.C, it encompasses six active and three extinct volcanoes. Most famously it is home to around half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Moreover, it’s also the site of groundbreaking gorilla conservation efforts conducted by primatologist Dian Fossey, the inspiration for the book and film, Gorillas in the Mist. Guests can visit her grave and research center. Even without the gorillas, the range of habitats and animals here is spectacular from bamboo forests to some of the last remaining afro-montane forest habitat on the planet.

The hotel offers several exciting activities but the most popular draw is gorilla trekking. The hotel will assist with purchasing permits and providing transport to the park’s headquarters. From there guests can take a one-hour guided hike through lush bamboo forests with the chance of spotting a fully-grown silverback gorilla, up to three times the size of an average man, yet remarkably peaceable and tolerant of human visitors. For an easier walk, there is always a golden monkey trek to watch these playful creatures jumping and climbing through the trees. For an additional fee, half-day canoe trips with Kingfisher Journeys is a great choice. An expert guide leads tours through the river, the habitat or otters and a wide variety of bird life. For more adventure, bike tours and rentals are available from the Africa Rising Cycling Center.

The hotel also features a restaurant for fine dining and a rustic-style bar. the comfortable lounge is the perfect place to relax after a hike and chat with other travelers. For more relaxation, the hotel also has a large swimming pool and massage hut. Hammocks are strung out between tress in the lovely, flourishing garden, an ideal spot for a quick nap.
