Mozambique

Vimizi Island

PLAN MY TRIP

On the edge of a tropical forest looking onto a white sandy beach and the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, Vamizi Island Lodge provides luxury accommodations in a paradise setting.

Ten spacious beach villas nestle in the trees just slightly back from the beach. Each villa is uniquely decorated with sumptuous furnishing in a range of themes from Balinese to Arabic to courtyard to contemporary. Two of the villas are perfect for families, with two large bedrooms divided by a roomy common area. The large bedrooms include king size four-poster beds with billowing muslin mosquito nets and Egyptian cotton sheets. The en suite marble bathrooms feature sunken tubs and walk-in showers. Each villa enjoys a private veranda with inviting sun loungers, peponi beds, and Swahili swing beds for maximum relaxation. Some of the villas even come with a private pool. The Tartaruga Villa even comes with two treehouse rooms.

Vamizi Island lies at the point where the south equatorial current splits, and the emergent cool and warm currents sustain unusually large amounts of microscopic plankton and krill, a major food source supporting a vast array of species. The Island is a diver’s dream because of the amazing seascape and diversity. At Neptune’s Arm, coral gardens tumble down a cliff. This part of the reef is so crowded with fish you can hardly see, and it was named as one of the top ten scuba sites on the planet.

Activities offered at the lodge center around the sparkling seas and include world class deep-sea or shore fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling in the pristine coral reefs, kayaking along the beach, cruising abroad in a dhow, paddling with turtles in the lagoon, or swimming in the turquoise waters. The lodge also offers guided walks with a seafood picnic, butterfly walks across the island, and day trips to nearby Rongui Island.

Unsurprisingly, the fare at the lodge includes fresh seafood and tropical dishes. During the day, meals are served in the main lodge’s thatched dining room or in Muntu Nkulu, the new castaway restaurant open only during the winter season. An additional option is a beach picnic. Dining in the evening is a more glamorous affair encompassing tasty grills on the beach or more elaborate dishes under lantern light in the dining room. Guests can enjoy cocktails and fine wines at the bar with acres of cushions and sofas for relaxation. The lodge also has a refreshing pool and a range of pampering treatments available at Vimizi’s spa too.
