Republic of Congo

Ngaga Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

In the heart of a lush rainforest, Ngaga Camp is the Congo's epicenter for gorilla encounters.

Accommodations at Ngaga Camp consist of six chalets that are constructed on raised wooden platforms high above forest floor. It is like being in a luxury treehouse built for adults! Each room has an en-suite bathroom with double vanity, indoor shower, and flush toilet. Ceiling fans help keep the rooms cool. The whole camp is constructed from natural materials, including locally woven raffia palm roofing panels. The room’s private 360-degree wraparound deck connects to the camp’s main walkways and is the perfect spot to relax while surveying the verdant canopy of trees and listening to exotic birds sing.

Ngaga Camp is ideally set in the lush Ndzehi Forest overlooking a forest stream on the western boundary of Odzala-Kokoua National Park. More importantly, the camp lies within the overlapping home ranges of several groups of western lowland gorillas. This is the perfect spot for both award-winning gorilla research and unforgettable encounters with these majestic primates. Other primates living in the area include putty-nose monkeys, crowned and mustached monkeys, and the rarer chimpanzees. Of course, the area supports plenty of other wildlife, including the black-casqued wattled hornbill, forest duikers, great blue turaco, and butterflies.

There is a variety of exciting activities available at the Ngaga Camp, but of course the primary draw is gorilla trekking. Skilled trackers lead hikes through the marantaceae forest in search of the western lowland gorillas in their natural habitat, with lots of opportunities to view other wildlife and birdlife along the way. The gorillas are accustomed to being observed by humans, and the guides interpret their tracks and behaviors to maximize the experience.

Other activities include guided bird watching and night walks. Guests can also visit the nearby Ombo Village to learn about how the local population lives off their forest home.

The main camp is built on raised platforms all interconnected by raised walkaways. The camp’s dining room, lounge, and bar overlook the rich, verdant rainforest. After an exciting day with the gorillas, pre-dinner drink are served on the star deck and fire pit, which are located on a sunken deck below the main area. There is also a river deck where guests can indulge in drinks, parties, and private dinners. The Ngaga stream is also great for cooling off.
