Mayleko Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Surrounded by lovely, green farmlands, the tranquil Mayleko Lodge is just ten minutes away from the ancient city of Gondar, known as the Camelot of Ethiopia.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of ten standard rooms and seventeen bungalows. The standard rooms, known as type A rooms are beautifully designed and furnished with two full-size beds and a modern en suite bathroom with a shower. The type B rooms or bungalows come with one king-sized bed and one queen-sized bed as well as an en suite bathroom with a shower. There is also a private veranda with a garden or mountain view. The type C bungalows are perfect for families. The rooms include one king-sized bed and one queen-sized bed, a sitting room, an en suite bathroom, and a private veranda.

The lodge is conveniently located just five minutes outside the ancient and royal city of Gondar. It was the home of many emperors and princesses who led the country from the 12th century to the last decade of the 20th century. The region is also the home of the highest mountain in Ethiopia, Ras Dashen, and the Simien Mountains National Park. The city declined after Emperor Tewodros II moved his seat of Government to Debre and was damaged by British bombs during 1941. Yet, most of the castles withstood the ravages of time.

The reception desk can help arrange tours to local sites. A must see is Gondar Castle, dubbed the Ethiopian Camelot. It is not a single castle, but the name given to the entire complex of castles and palaces in the area. The most impressive castle is the two-storied palace of Emperor Fasilidas, built of roughly hewn brown basalt stones. But there are many other famous sites within the royal compound. Located in the Kaha River valley south of Gondar, is a well-preserved bathing palace usually attributed to Fasilidas. Gondar is also a city of historic churches. Debre Birhan Selassie or Light of the Trinity is the most beautiful with its painted ceilings. Going further afield, day trips can be booked to visit the Simien Mountains.

The lodge houses a restaurant for fine dining. Drinks can be enjoyed on the terrace overlooking the gardens towards the mountains. The refreshing pool is the perfect spot to relax. There is even a fitness room. Free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby. Added amenities include a free juice cocktail upon arrival and shuttle service to the royal compound.
