Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Located on the crater rim of Ngorongoro, Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp offers ready access to the crater and its stunning wildlife, while bypassing the normal crowds.

Eight canvas tents provide the ultimate in camping luxury, and a family tent comfortably accommodates a family of five. Each tent has been placed on solid wood flooring covered with rugs and has been furnished with a gas heater, two queen-sized beds with a warm duvet, 24-hour solar lighting, and a dressing area. The en-suite bathroom features flush toilets, large safari showers and plenty of running water. A private veranda is furnished with outside loungers from which to enjoy early morning teas and coffees and refreshing afternoon gin and tonics.

The camp is located in an acacia forest of the rim of Ngorongoro. Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest, inactive, and completely intact caldera. Apart from the main caldera, Ngorongoro contains two other volcanic craters: Olmoti and Empakai, the first is famous for its spectacular waterfalls, and the latter houses a deep lake and verdant, green walls. Dense forests fed by the fertile volcanic earth provide a home for over 25,000 resident mammals from predators to prey. Here guests can spy large herds of wildebeest, buffalo, zebras, and Thomson’s gazelles as well as their predators the cheetahs, jackals, lions, and hyenas. The forest, marshes, and highland meadows are also a favorite of the elephants.

Game drives from the camp can begin as early as 6:00 am. The proximity of the camp allows guests to descend to the crater floor in a mere fifteen minutes. While the early start allows for an undisturbed opportunity to experience the breathtaking views and abundant wildlife without the crowds. Nature walks along the crater rim with an armed ranger and Maasai guide explore the area at a slower pace and with a more detailed look at the local flora and fauna. Cultural tours of the local Maasai villages and schools let visitors learn about their rich culture and traditions.

The main canvas mess tent houses a comfortable lounge, dining area, and bar outfitted with grand sofas, lamps, wooden bookshelves, corner shelves, chests, and rugs. Sundowners around the campfire prior to a delicious dinner served beneath chandeliers provide ample opportunity for guests to converse about the day’s adventures and learn about the local Maasai culture. House alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and laundry are included. Charging stations and internet are provided as well.
