Nyungwe House

PLAN MY TRIP

Nestled within the rolling, wooded hillsides of a working tea plantation, Nyungwe House provides an idyllic escape into nature with all the comforts of a luxury hotel.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of twenty-three elegant rooms and suites divided between five charming wooden villas. The one-bedroom comes with a king bed or two twins and includes a cozy sitting area with a fireplace, an en suite bathroom with both a shower and stand-alone tub, and a furnished balcony. The spacious two-bedroom suite features a king-sized bed in the master bedroom and two twins in the second room. It also comes with an stylish living and dining room, two en-suite bathrooms, and a private deck. Additional amenities include a mini bar, LCD television, and air conditioning.

The lodge is located of the edge of Nyungwe Forest National Park which encompasses 602 square miles of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bogs. The forest is in the watershed between the basin of the Congo River to the west and the basin of the Nile River to the east. Nyungwe is one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rainforests and believed to be one of the oldest as well. There is a wide diversity of animals in the forest including thirteen primate species such as chimpanzees, Angola colobus monkeys, silver monkeys, golden monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys, and olive baboon. In fact, the forest is home to one of East Africa’s last intact populations of chimpanzees and boasts two wild chimp communities that tolerate visitors.

The popular guided chimpanzee trek is the best way to spot these magnificent primates. While another popular trek searches out the habitat of the colobus monkeys. Guests can also explore the working tea plantation of Gisakura to learn the history and process from plant to tea bag. While bird watchers can try to spot some of the 300 birds species found in the area. For a one of a kind experience, there is always spear throwing on a hilltop above the tea plantation. Other activities include guided tours of the kitchen garden, cultural expeditions, archery lessons, mountain biking, and helicopter rides.

An ever-changing menu of delicious locally sourced meals are served in the lodge’s Rwandan-inspired dining room with its stunning views of the lush plantation. The Tea Lounge plays host to the daily tea ceremony and includes a library and bar. The One&Only Spa has a wide menu of pampering treatments and there is a small but well-equipped gym available as well. The lodge’s infinity pool is the ideal place to cool off or enjoy some light bites and refreshments.
