Madagascar

Grand Hotel Urban

PLAN MY TRIP

The colonial elegance and meticulous attentions of the Grand Hotel Urban welcomes guests with open arms to Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar.

Accommodations at the hotel consist of forty-five luxury rooms spread over seven floors. There are single, business, comfort, and deluxe rooms to choose from as well as several lovely suites. The rooms are decorated with clean, modern lines and hardwood floors. Every room includes an en suite bathroom, complimentary Wi-Fi, satellite television, air conditioning, safety-deposit boxes, and a hairdryer. The suite rooms enjoy the unique feature of having a shower and bathtub next to the bed. It even includes a patio with cozy chairs for relaxing and taking in the views of the city.

The hotel is ideally located in the heart of the city’s business district. Antanarivo, known sometimes as Tana was established in the 17th century by the Merino people who still make up a majority of the population today. The city became the site of the Merino King’s fortified royal compound and was a thriving metropolis well before the French invaded in 1894 and continued to grow even after independence in 1960. The Haute-Ville stands out with its beautiful colonial buildings set on steep streets. The city’s markets offer tantalizing foods and unique crafts.

Crowning the top of the city’s tallest hill, the Manjakamiadana, the fortified palace designed for Queen Ranavalona I by Scottish missionary James Cameron is a must-see. Seeking to tempt the taste buds, Le Sake marries gourmet French cuisine with local flavors in a gorgeous wooden house full of old black-and-white photos and local artwork. Hidden in the city’s industrial center, Lake Alarobia is a crucial refuge and nesting site for fourteen threatened endemic bird species such as the Madagascar pond heron, Meller’s duck and Madagascar little grebe. Other popular sights include the Presidential Palace, Marche Artisanal de La Digue, Lisy Art Gallery, and Museum of Art and Archeology.

The hotel houses its own charming restaurant who serves up an extensive menu from local specialties to European cuisine. Since the hotel is set in the highest part of the city, the Skybar therefore boasts the best place to enjoy a cocktail along with the unparalleled view. There is also a swimming pool and a massage room to help guests unwind. The hotel provides other services like 24-hour security in the hotel, car rental service, currency exchange, and meeting spaces.
