Namibia

Desert Dune Safari

PLAN MY TRIP

Along with the Diverse Namibia Safari, the Desert Dune Safari explores the unique highlights of Namibian ecotourism and landscapes.

The exciting nine night/ ten-day journey explores Namibia from Sossusvlei’s red dunes to the resort town of Swakopmund on the Atlantic to Namibia’s legendary Skeleton Coast to the rocky desert of Damaraland. The adventure runs between May and mid-November. The adventure begins and ends with a transfer from Windhoek International airport. Along the way adventurers will experiences the diverse landscapes and places of interest, including day and night nature drives, sea- and land-based wildlife viewing, flying, driving, and boating.

The safari kicks off with days one and two exploring the Kulala Wilderness Reserve of Sossusvlei, a clay pan fringed by enormous sand dunes that are famous for glowing red in the early morning light. Part of the Namib Desert, it’s the perfect spot to explore the vast sands dunes on quad bikes, horseback riding, nature walks, and hot air balloon rides. Days three and four travel to exciting Swakopmund on the Skeleton Coast. Boat trips around Walvis Bay encounter dolphins, seals, and whale watching. There is also an excursion to see the Kuiseb River Delta, the saltpans and the wetlands just north of the Sandwich Harbor Lagoon with the possibility of seeing their famed flamingos.

Day five explores the Skeleton Coast National Park for some hiking, bird watching, game viewing, and fishing with a permit. Days six and seven takes in the starkly beautiful Palmwag Concession with sightings of desert-adapted elephant, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, oryx, giraffe, and springbok. Finally, days eight and nine are spent in the arid desert of Damaraland tracking desert-adapted endangered black rhinos and other desert wildlife.

Accommodations during the journey vary. The first two nights are spent at Kulala Desert Lodge in one of twenty-three thatched desert kulalas that include a private veranda overlooking the desert. The lodge’s dining and lounge area overlook a busy waterhole. The next two nights are spent in Namibia’s oldest hotel, Hansa House. The hotel’s luxurious rooms feature twin and double beds with an en suite bathroom including a separate bath and shower. While breakfast and dinner can be enjoyed in the dining room, lunch is served on the terrace overlooking the lush gardens. Night five is at Terrace Bay Lodge in rustic, yet comfortable en suite rooms or a family chalet. The final two nights take place at Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp in one of eight stylish en suite tents with shaded verandas overlooking the breathtaking views of the valley and tributaries. A small plunge pool cools guests off in summer, while the winter lounge provides a cozy retreat from cold Atlantic fogs.
