Mara Expedition Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Sitting in a small bend in the Ntiakitiak River in the awe-inspiring Maasai Mara, Mara Expedition Camp’s safari chic design and simple elegance hark back to the days of classic safaris.

Accommodations at the camp consist of five light and spacious canvas tents on slightly raised decking and under the shade of the riverine forest. Each tent comes with an en suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, flush toilets, and bucket showers. Inspired by the style of early exploration and discovery safaris, the tents are decorated with brass chandeliers, old Indian chests, and local natural materials. For added privacy, the tents enjoy their own shaded veranda, the perfect spot for a morning coffee while enjoying a breathtaking view.

The camp is set in a private and secluded site in Kenya’s famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve next to the Ntiakitiak River taking advantage of both the thick forest, savanna, and riverbanks. It is also adjacent to the Mara North Conservancy taking full advantage of both parks in the Maasai Mara eco-system. Both areas are world-famous for being the site of the great migration when 1,300,000 wildebeest, half a million Thomson’s gazelles, 200,000 zebra, and hundreds of thousands of other plains game cross the plains in search of fresh pastures. Of course, predators such as lion and hyena follow the herds, hoping to prey on the young calves.

There are plenty of activities available. Daily game drives in specially designed open-sided Land Cruisers are conducted by expert guides and trackers. The vehicles include a fully-stocked fridge and photography tools. In fact, the camp has two professional Canon camera sets, each with a 50D camera and 100-400mm and wide-angle macros lenses available on a complimentary basis for a first come/first serve opportunity. There are also a limited number of Leica binoculars for guest’s complimentary use during their stay. Other activities available at an additional cost include a horse safari mimicking the treks of the missionaries and explorers of old and a hot air balloon ride for a bird’s eye view of the Maasai Mara.

The simple main area of camp is set under a grove of Africa ebony trees and lit by the romantic glow of lanterns and candlelight at night. There is a comfortable, lounge, library and a bar for guest’s enjoyment. Delicious meals are eaten communally in the chic mess tent. While relaxing evenings are spent around the outside fire pit. The camp is locally famous for its leopard residents wandering the riverbanks.
