Little Governors’ Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Located around a large watering hole in the game-rich Maasai Mara Game Reserve, Little Governors’ Camp is a luxury tent camp full of character and eco-friendly practices.

The safari camp consists of 17 luxury canvas tents. Each spacious tent is decorated in soft, earthy hues that blend with its natural surroundings and features an en suite bathroom with a shower and toilet. They also include polished wooden decks with large verandas to enable guests to relax and enjoy the wide array of animals visiting the popular watering hole in front of the tent. Tent 17 or the Honeymoon suite is located at the edge of the camp for added privacy. Other amenities include dressing gowns, complimentary Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, and laundry service.

The camp is accessible by a boat ride across the Mara River, then an escorted walk through the riverine forest leaving vehicles on the opposite shore. This gives the camp, a quiet and secluded feeling. The Mara River waters are swarming with bird-life, hippo and crocodile, in the heart of Kenya’s grand Maasai Mara National Reserve. The Reserve is well-known for its hilly grasslands fed by plentiful rains and home for a wide array of wildlife from the Big Five to herds of migrating wildebeest. For the last 10 years, the main camps have been the base for the B.B.C.’s famous Big Cat diaries series which have made the plains of East Africa so famous. The Governors Camps also supports several conservation projects and community support programs.

Activities at the camp are plentiful, especially from the main camp. Highly-trained and experienced guides head up daily game drives in custom-made vehicles to some of the best viewing areas in the Reserve. Hot air balloon rides offer an aerial view of the stunning landscapes below. Walking safaris take place in a private concession area adjacent to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve giving a different view and experience than found on game drives. Maasai cultural visits to Mara Rianda, a traditional community, show a way of life almost virtually unchanged for centuries. The camp can also arrange overnight trips to the beautiful unspoiled Mfangano Island on Lake Victoria.

Breakfast and lunch are served in the open tents or outside, and the resident family of warthogs frequently wander amongst the tables. Since all Governors’ properties are unfenced and in the heart of the Maasai Mara Reserve, there is an excellent chance that elephants may also stroll past. In the evening, a relaxing log fire burns in front of the well-stocked Bar Tent. A delicious dinner is served in the nearby Dining Tent. Due to its sustainable practices, the camp has been awarded a Bronze Eco-Rating from Eco Tourism Kenya.
