For those short on time but full of longing to see the historic sites of northern Ethiopia, our Classic Historic Route with Simien Mountains tour will satiate their desires and fill their cameras.

This eight-night/nine-day journey covers all the important sites from Addis Ababa to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Simien Mountains by flying from one site to the next for a prime historical tour. With a minimum of two people to begin the journey, the tour will visit the beauties of the Blue Nile Falls and sprawling Lake Tana as well as the rich historic sites of the church of St. Mary of Zion, believed to be the final resting place of the Ark of the Covenant and the ruins of the infamous Queen of Sheba’s palace. The tour is led by professional English-speaking guides. Travelers can enjoy this historical adventure complete with boat rides and mule trek to centuries old churches.

Comfortable hotel accommodations will consist of a shared twin room. All entrance fees, local transfers, ground transportation and insurance, guides, mule hire, and boat rentals are covered in the fee as well as meals outside of Addis Abba.

  • Brief Itinerary
  • Day 1: Arrival at Addis Ababa and transfer to hotel.
  • Day 2: Fly to Bahir Dar and visit Blue Nile Falls before lunch. Afternoon boat ride on Lake Tana to 14th c. monasteries.
  • Day 3: Drive to Gondar. Visit Imperial Castle Compound, the Bath of Emperor Fasiladas, the 17th c. church of Quskuam Mariam and other sites.
  • Day 4: Drive to Debark and then onto Simien Mountains to see gelada baboon.
  • Day 5: Drive to Axum, the earliest capital of Ethiopia.
  • Day 6: Tour of Axum including church of St. Mary of Zion, palace of King Kaleb, and the ruined palace of the Queen of Sheba.
  • Day 7: Fly to Lalibela and tour 12th c. rock hewn churches of King Lalibela.
  • Day 8: Mule ride up to 13th c. church of Asheton Mariam
  • Day 9: Fly back to Addis Abba for a half-day tour of the city including the National Archeological Museum and largest open-air market in Africa. End with traditional dinner party and folkloric dances.
